Science news The portal for national research

Our most comprehensive web project - the Swedish portal for national research. The project consisted of developing a new and responsive website with a focus on the research-interested public in particular. The award-winning news site Forskning.se is a collaboration between Formas, Forte, the Knowledge Foundation, the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency, the Riksbank's Jubilee Fund, the Foundation for Strategic Research, the Swedish Research Council, Vinnova and a majority of the country's universities and colleges.

The assignment included migrating previous content (approximately 20,000 articles) from the Sitevision CMS platform to WordPress CMS. The website is developed to work in both mobile devices and desktops and the experience was intended to be educational with a clear form of graphics and function.

The website has been ranked among the top 5 in the category Education in Internetworld’s annual Top 100 of Sweden’s best sites 2016 with the motivation With a new, responsive site, they shoulder the mantle in a brilliant way. The research articles become appetizing and easy to understand with an educational language and a pleasing magazine style. The same award was also awarded for years 2017 and 2018 with the motivation With a qualitative content and a form that is more delicious than most newspaper magazines, Forskning.se shows that research is both hot and exciting.

Our task was front-end development in the form of varoius design templates within a framework and CSS, HTML and Javascript coding represented the bulk of the work. Backend development of various functions and plug-ins to enable migration of content, as well as to expand the administrative functionality of WordPress, were included as important elements.

The work also included a written survey of the Swedish Research Council’s need for a DAM (Digital Asset Managment) solution and visuals for communication purposes. Several DAM packages were analyzed here (compared in terms of function, cost calculations, agreements) and image agencies (compared in terms of cost, offers, terms and conditions) as well as various routines for image use. Our inquiry presented proposals for alternative image bank solutions, as well as better routines for image management in general.
